Declaration of a Major

This policy requires degree-seeking students to declare a major by the time they have earned 45 credits.

Policy Statement

  1. A degree-seeking student must declare a major course of study once the student has earned 45 undergraduate credits.
    1. Students matriculating with 45 or more earned undergraduate credits must declare a major during their first semester.
      1. A student matriculating with 45 or more earned undergraduate credits who is pursuing a special admission major may petition the Provost's designee for an extension.

Reason for Policy 

 This policy increases the likelihood of timely completion of the curriculum requirements for a baccalaureate degree.   

Responsibilities 

For following this policy:  Degree-seeking students

For assisting students in fulfillment of their responsibilities:  Faculty or staff member designated as primary advisor

For enforcement of policy:  Registrar

For oversight of policy:  Provost

For development of procedures:  Registrar and Provost's designee

For notification:  Policy Librarian

Definitions 

Undergraduate credits:  Credits in courses numbered 100-499 and 1100-1799. 

Consequences of Non-Compliance

A student who does not meet the requirements of this policy will not be able to register for a subsequent semester.
