Faculty Emergency Leave

Department chairs and program directors with instructors of record on approved family, medical or other emergency leave are responsible for securing temporary instructional coverage.

Policy Statement

  1. To avoid course cancellations and instructional gaps that are disruptive to students’ progress to degree and achievement of learning outcomes, department chairs and program directors (hereafter, chairs) are responsible for securing temporary instructional coverage if an instructor of record has been approved for family, medical or other emergency leave (hereafter emergency leave) during a Fall, Spring or Summer semester.
     
  2. These are the expectations of chairs:

    Instructor of record goes on approved leave PRIOR to first day of classInstructor of record goes on approved leave AFTER the first day of class

    Leave will be one week or less in duration

    Leave will be more than one week in duration

    Leave will be one week or less in duration

    Leave will be more than one week in duration

    Chair arranges ad hoc instructional coverage

    Chair hires temporary instructor or cancels course

    Chair arranges ad hoc instructional coverage

    Chair hires temporary instructor

  3. When a chair needs to arrange ad hoc instructional coverage because the emergency leave will be one week or less in duration, the chair may seek volunteers from the faculty, administration, or staff.
     

  4. When a chair needs to hire a temporary instructor because the emergency leave will be more than one week in duration, the chair may offer the assignment to a regular or term faculty member.

    1. A regular or term faculty member may decline a chair’s offer of a temporary instructional assignment without penalty.

    2. A permanent faculty member or full-time visitor who accepts a temporary instructional assignment will be compensated based on the current overload pay schedule, pro-rated based on the total number of class sessions required.
       

    3. An adjunct faculty member who accepts an assignment will be compensated based on the applicable instructor rate, pro-rated based on the number of class sessions required.




Reason for Policy 

This policy establishes that the chair or program director is responsible for arranging temporary instructional coverage when a faculty member is on emergency leave.
