9-5: Tree Relocation/Replacement

Issued: 12-13-95
Revised: 2-02

I. OVERVIEW

As the campus is developed, it will be necessary to build on locations with existing trees. Trees are impacted by development even when construction does not occur directly on their immediate site. Almost every project requires installation of underground utility services and sidewalks. This work damages and stresses the trees. Often roots are cut. The end result is usually the loss of trees even if they are not removed initially. There are few open sites on campus where development can occur without impacting trees.

II. OBJECTIVE

A college policy for the relocation/replacement of trees on campus is required. The Tree Relocation /Replacement Policy needs to be implemented to address the following:

A. Manage the tree relocation /replacement portion of the construction process.

B. Insure that all appropriate interests are represented.

C. Maintain respect for mature existing trees.

D. Be cost effective with appropriated funds.

III. POLICY

Projects will continue to be designed to minimize the impact to trees.

Trees that can be moved with a tree spade will be moved to a location outside of the construction area. In cases where design constraints or cost effectiveness cannot be demonstrated, they will be replaced with the largest readily available nursery stock of the same species at a location outside the construction area.

Large trees, those that cannot be moved with a tree spade, will be either relocated or replaced depending on factors such as design constraints and cost effectiveness. In most cases it is anticipated that large trees will be replaced with the largest readily available nursery stock of the same species at a location outside the construction area.

Large trees that are determined to be extremely valuable will be moved by boxing the roots and then moved utilizing a crane, if funding permits.

The cost for all relocation or replacement of trees shall be borne by the project which impacts the tree.

Decisions regarding relocation versus replacement will be made be made by the Director, Physical Plant Services.
