Academic Standings - Graduate 

Policy Summary

To be in good standing, graduate students must earn a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and complete 80% or more of all attempted credits as well as any additional standards established by their academic department.

III. Cumulative Pace Standard

  1. Students must complete 80% of all cumulative attempted credits in courses numbered 600-700 to be in good standing for pace. A course is considered completed when the student earns a grade of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, or C-, A course is not considered completed when the student earns a grade of D+, D, D-, F, I, IP, GW, or MW. 
  2. Students who complete 50% to 79% of their cumulative attempted coursework are on probation for pace.
  3. Students on probation who fail to achieve a minimum cumulative pace standard of 80% of attempted graduate coursework after one semester will be academically disqualified.
  4. Students who achieve a cumulative pace of 49% or lower will be academically disqualified.

I. Policy Statement

  1. Academic standing is a measurement of the quality of a graduate student's academic performance at a given point in time.  Every graduate student enrolled in a course after Census Date of a fall, spring, or summer semester will have one of the following academic standings assigned at the end of the term:
    1. Good Standing
    2. Probation
    3. Academic Disqualification
  2. To be in good standing, graduate students must meet the minimum cumluative cumulative grade point average and minimum cumluative pace standards in this policy as well as any additional standards that have been established by their master's degree or graduate certificate programs.  
  3. Students can be academically disqualified by violating either cumulative grade point average and/or cumulative pace standards or departmental standards.

II. Cumulative Grade Point Average Standard

  1. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in all coursework numbered 600-700 to be in good standing for GPA.
  2. Students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 - 2.99 are on probation for GPA.
  3. Students on probation who earn a 3.00 grade point average for each subsequent term will remain on probation until their cumulative grade point average is at or above 3.00.
  4. Students on probation whose following term gpa falls under 3.0 will be placed on academic disqualification.
  5. Students on probation who fail to achieve a minimum cumulative semester grade point average of 3.00 after one semester will be academically disqualified for GPA, with the option to appeal for program continuation.
  6. Students can move to academic probation when a term gpa is 3.00 or above and remain on probation as long as they continue to earn a term gpa of 3.00.
  7. Students who fail to achieve a minimum GPA of 1.99 will be academically disqualified for GPA.

IV. Consequences of Standings

  1. Students who are in good standing for cumulative grade point average and cumulative pace may continue to enroll. 
  2. Students who are on probation for cumulative grade point average and/or pace may continue to enroll after establishing an academic plan with their academic advisor. 
  3. Students on probation who do not meet standards after one term term will be academically disqualified. 
  4. Students who are academically disqualified for either cumulative grade point average and/or cumulative pace may not continue to enroll unless reinstated on appeal by the Post-Baccalaureate and Graduate Academic Standards Committee.

*Students may need to appeal probation in order to graduate if they do not have enough time in the program to bring their cumulative grade point to 3.00 grade point average.

*Students can continue in the program on probation as long as they maintain a term grade point average of 3.00.

III. Notification of Academic Standing  

  1. At the conclusion of the fall, spring, and summer semesters, an email will be sent to every graduate student's Fort Lewis College account explaining how to check their academic standing for cumulative grade point average and cumulative pace.
  2. Students on probation based on cumulative grade point average and/or cumulative pace standards are expected to establish an academic plan with their academic advisor prior to the beginning of the next semester.
  3. Students with an academic standing of academic disqualification will be provided instructions in their notification email about how to appeal.

IV. Adjustment of Academic Standing Based on Department Standards

  1. A graduate student may be required by their department to meet additional standards.  
  2. Department standards are published as part of the requirements for the master's degree or graduate certificate in the Catalog of Courses
  3. If through a process established by the department, a student has been judged to not be making satisfactory academic progress, the department may petition the Post-Baccalaureate and Graduate Academic Standards Committee to change a student's academic standing to Probation or Academic Disqualification.

V. Consideration of Appeals and Petitions

  1. The Post-Baccalaureate and Graduate Academic Standards Committee reviews student appeals and departmental petitions three times per year in January, May, and August.  
  2. Deadlines for appeals and petitions are published on the Committee's website.  
  3. Students may appeal academic disqualification based on cumulative grade point average and/or cumulative pace standards if:
    1. There are documented special circumstances why the standards were not met, and
    2. There is high probability that the student's cumulative GPA can be raised to 3.00 or higher in no more than one additional semester of coursework and/or there is high probability that the student can begin to maintain pace requirements in the futuresubsequent semesters of coursework.
  4. Students will be notified of the Committee's decision by email to their Fort Lewis College account.
  5. If an appeal of disqualification is approved, the Committee will assign the student the standing of "Reinstated From Academic Disqualification" and, in consultation with faculty in the student's department, will establish specific requirements the student must meet and the consequences of not meeting those requirements. 
  6. If an appeal is denied, the student may appeal to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Provost's decision is final.

IX.  Revision History

This policy revises the Academic Standing - Graduate policy approved by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs on Aug. 25, 2013 by adding a cumulative pace standard and eliminating the downward adjustment of academic standing for a student who withdraws from an entire semester with grades of GW. 

August 2021, cumulative pace requirement eliminated.
