I. Policy Statement

  1. Because Fort Lewis College meets federal requirements for a 30-week academic year by scheduling a 14-week instructional period followed by a final examination week in its Fall and Spring semesters, all courses assigned the following instructional types as defined in Academic Credit Hour policy, that are scheduled to meet for a full term (14 weeks) must meet during the final examination week:
    1. Art studio

    2. Field experience

    3. Lecture

    4. Music Studio, Ensembles

    5. Physical Education and Recreation

    6. Recitation

    7. Web enhanced/blended/hybrid\

    8. Distance Education

  2. The meeting during final exam week must be in the same format as the meetings during the full term, e.g., a face-to-face meeting in a classroom s expected in a course that meets face-to-face in a classroom during the full term.
  3. The final examination week meeting schedule is approved by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs upon recommendation of the Uniform Scheduling Committee of a proposal prepared by the Registrar.
    1. Requests to change the final examination meeting schedule may be made following a procedure established by the Provost.
  4. The final examination meeting schedule will be published on the Registrar’s website.

  5. To provide clear communication to students about their attendance obligations during final examination week, a note in the course schedule will explicitly address whether the course has a meeting during final examination week and, if so, the day, time, and location of the meeting.

Reason for Policy

Because Fort Lewis College only has a 14-week instructional period in the Fall and Spring semesters, it must schedule class meetings during a final examination week each of those terms to meet the federal requirements for a 30-week academic year as set forth in 34 CFR 668.3.  This policy seeks to clarify for faculty their institutional responsibility to meet their classes during final exam week and for students their obligations to attend those meetings.
